Jewelry Care

How to care for your Jewelry

Everyday Care:

Stretch bracelets should not be worn in water. Perfumes and lotions can deteriorate the chord and dim the color of the stone.  Chemicals for cleaning or pool chemicals can also deteriorate the chord.   Remove before working out, cleaning house, etc.  to keep the size in tact.

Gemstones:

According to the Gem Society you should try the following steps:

  • As a first step, let your jewelry piece soak for a few moments in a solution of warm water and mild detergent or cleaning solution.
  • Use a soft brush to gently scrub your jewelry.
  • A shaved matchstick or toothpick is quite good at picking out accumulations, but don’t be too harsh. Patience pays off.
  • When you’ve finished scrubbing, dip the jewelry piece back into the solution for one last wetting. Then rinse in warm running water, preferably about the same temperature as your solution. Radical temperature changes are dangerous and should be avoided.
  • Shake or blow on the jewelry piece to remove excess liquid, then gently polish with a soft lint-free cloth or chamois.
  • Here’s a jeweler’s trick to avoid any liquid stains on a gem or precious metal setting. Dispense with the cloth and immerse the jewelry piece in a bed of dry maple wood chips. Once dry, blow away the chips. The piece will be free of water spots. The wood chip technique works best for large gems.

Sterling Silver:

According to BHG you should try the following steps:

Mix two parts baking soda to one part water to make a paste, then gently rub the mixture onto the jewelry. Let the paste dry completely to remove the tarnish. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth or microfiber towel. You can also follow a similar method using cornstarch.

Sterling silver can be cleaned with a sterling silver polishing cloth. Avoid chlorine water and rubbing with paper products, which can scratch the silver. Store pieces in a cool dry place away from light and air to prevent excess tarnishing. We recommend using the sterling silver specific liquid jewelry cleaner. For pieces containing stones, pearls and crystals, we recommend using the polishing cloth only, as the liquid can damage some stones.

Gold Plated

Be sure to keep separate from other jewelry to prevent scratching and remove before showering or cleaning. Polish gently using yellow gold specific polishing cloth.

Plated Jewelry:

Use warm water with a mild, fragrance-free soap to clean plated items. Gently pat dry with a cotton or microfiber cloth. Do not use a jewelry cleaner.  They can tarnished and face the plating.
